Britt Warner

According to The Reformed Tomboy:

"As the name of this blog suggests, I wasn't very girlie growing up. Lo-and-behold, I've since put the toy cement trucks and G.I. Joes away in favor of makeup and shoes. I think the way a woman looks on the outside can be very indicative of how she feels on the inside...which means that I fill my days with what makes me happiest: music, writing, love, and laughter. I've learned to let my various dualities coexist...that is to say, I can build you a house from scratch, but it's nice to put on a pretty dress, too." - Britt Warner

Raw Content

Yesterday yielded another cathartic, beautiful music session with Daniel. We have arranged ten songs and are about to begin the recording process for my album!

Since I'll still be writing new songs all the while, we'll most likely end up working on a couple more arrangements amidst the recording process, which is perfect. I'd like the songs to be representative of this  entire year's journey, rather than just a couple months' worth.

I'll tell you, though: the lyrical content is raw, soul-baring, and leaves me feeling completely vulnerable, to the point where I have to rebuild some of my armor before leaving the studio, before re-entering the world. My husband's been in Afghanistan for six months now, and navigating all of the various emotions that that entails is no walk in the park.

That's a big reason why making this record is so important to me: it is the only thing in my current life that makes me feel human, that makes me feel...like me.

Caliente en El Cholo

I spent a lovely day in Santa Monica with my music journal and a vanilla latte.

Then I joined my friends Cait and Shay for dinner at El Cholo's, which is the best authentic Mexican food in the city. It's on Wilshire at 11th. I highly recommend the Pina Coladas and Blue Corn Enchiladas with Roasted Chicken. Excuse me while I slip into a lovely food coma...

Zebracorny

I'm headed out to work on my songs with Daniel Dempsey in South El Monte. We're halfway done with the arrangements and will soon begin recording my album!

Since our sessions involve four to five hours of sitting, it's important to be comfortable. This Zebracorn shirt from Modcloth is a personal favorite, comfy enough to sleep in (which, admittedly, I have done once or twice).

I've been very drawn to ballet flats lately - at 5'10", I don't exactly need the extra height that heels add - but my platform Mary Janes by Mia are supportive, work well with almost any outfit...and are freakin' adorable.

Since getting my wrist tattoos, I rarely wear bracelets anymore...but am feeling inspired to change that.

Hopefully I'm not forgetting anything - it seems I always leave the house lacking one particular item or another. I'll find out soon enough!

Wake 'N' Bake

I've gotten into the habit of making muffins from scratch every week. It's a recipe I made up and it's not only incredibly delicious, but very healthy and low in fat, too!

          Britt's Bangin' Muffins
Directions: Preheat oven to 350. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl. Gradually add milk, applesauce, egg, and yogurt, blending each. Add fruit and nuts last, stirring well. (Note: Any of these ingredients can be substituted to suit the dietary needs of vegans and those with gluten allergies. Instead of milk, egg, and yogurt, simply double up on applesauce. White flour can be substituted for wheat. Also, I purchase most of my ingredients at Whole Foods Market and these are the brands that I personally prefer, but you should use the products of whomever you like!) Spray muffin tin with Spectrum Naturals Coconut Spray Oil. Fill muffin tin with batter.

For small muffins, only fill halfway (100 calories each); for large muffins, overflow the tin slightly (200 calories each). Bake for ten minutes, checking periodically. Test one muffin by sticking it with a fork. Muffins are done baking when fork comes up clean.

My Bangin' Muffins are jam-packed with whole grains, fiber, protein, Vitamins A and D, calcium, Omega-3 fatty acids, and iron. Enjoy with your morning cup of coffee or as an afternoon snack. I like to make twelve muffins at a time and then put the covered bowl in the fridge. That way, I can bake them fresh as needed...and sneak spoonfuls of batter when the urge strikes!

Flannel and Pin Curls

I am on my way to a photo shoot with Spencer Shuler, who is pretty much a genius.

I put my hair in pin curls to prevent it from falling flat on the drive to Tustin. When I arrive, I'll brush it out for a big, tousled effect.

June Gloom in July

My Facebook newsfeed is full of Southern Californians lamenting about the June Gloom in July.

Personally, I'm enjoying the unexpected cold front, knowing full-well that there are lots of broiling days ahead.

Not to mention, it's so hot back East that people and animals are literally losing their lives. I think I'll layer with gratitude.

I'm off to go play laser tag with my brother and sister - gotta make the most of this rare day off, which means getting as far away from my computer as possible...if only for a few hours!

We Can All Be Forever 21

I didn't realize I was a walking billboard for Forever 21 until I went to post this just now.

Of all the options in my closet, it's ridiculous that I didn't throw in a random piece from elsewhere...but that's one of the reasons Forever 21 is the go-to place for females young, old, and in-between. There's something for everyone, and they've even expanded to include a small men's section in some stores.

The socially-conscious berate me for supporting Chinese-made clothing, as they own most of our country's debt. It's our own fault for HAVING that debt. The American government needs to cut up its credit cards into little pieces - if they don't have the cash, they can't afford the wars. Simple as that.

Instead of feeling guilty every time I swipe my debit card, I simply tell myself that I'm helping to PAY OFF American debt. Can I help it if Communists make the cutest clothes? (Don't answer that.)

Paris Pictures!

Being with Luke in Paris defies words, so I'll let the pictures do the talking...

Now that it's over, these pictures are invaluable. To have experienced Paris for the first time together was sheer bliss, and we intend to have a second, third, fourth, and so on. The memories of our time there will sustain both of us for the next leg of Luke's deployment in Afghanistan...and for that, I am eternally grateful.

The Pre-Paris Skinny

I left Seattle two weeks ago and returned home to California. My sister and I are roomies, which is a blast so far!

Yes, I am too skinny - knowing one's husband is in a war zone for a year will do that - but have no fear!

Wednesday, I am boarding a plane for Paris, France! Luke's two weeks of R&R have finally arrived, and by the end of our rendezvous, I will have breasts made of creme fraiche and croissants for buns...maybe.
